Description
The ICR-2834-S1 is an industrial-grade LTE Category 4 cellular router designed for applications that demand a high level of cybersecurity. Based on the proven ICR-2834 platform, it offers similar network and interface capabilities. However, the S1 variant has been specifically adapted to meet the requirements of the IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 1 standard.
The router incorporates a comprehensive set of security features in line with the standard, including secure boot, a read-only file system with integrity checks (AIDE), encrypted firmware images, enforced strong password policies, account lockout mechanisms, restricted administrative access (no root account), and the use of only strong cryptographic algorithms (e.g., SHA-256, RSA-3072, ED25519). The web interface is HTTPS-only, and extensibility is limited to secure, signed Router Apps in the .raw format.
The device supports LTE Category 4 cellular communication with automatic fallback to 3G or 2G when LTE is unavailable. It is equipped with two independent 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports, two SIM slots with failover support, two RS-232/RS-485 serial ports selectable via DIP switches, a USB 2.0 host port, and four digital inputs and two digital outputs. Optional Wi-Fi (802.11ac/a/b/g/n) is also available.
The router runs on the ICR-OS S1 Linux-based operating system and includes 1.3 GB of eMMC storage for applications and data. It supports a wide range of advanced networking features such as DHCP, NAT, VRRP, VLAN, SNMP, NTP, DynDNS, firewall, and DMZ, as well as VPN tunneling via OpenVPN, WireGuard, IPsec, and GRE. Protocol conversion for Modbus RTU/TCP, DNP3, MQTT, IEC 101/104, and others is supported through approved Router Apps only.
S1 routers cannot be created from standard models — they must be factory-produced as S1 devices. They require the dedicated ICR-OS S1 firmware and compatible .raw format applications. The user interface is visually identical to standard routers but marked with “S1” and an orange accent color in the GUI.
Advantech also provides a cloud-based management platform, WebAccess/DMP, which enables:
- Remote device diagnostics
- Centralized fleet management
- Cloud-based configuration, including automated provisioning when the device is first powered on
- Simple, encrypted VPN creation
- Grouping of devices into communication domains
- Defining communication rules (e.g., which subnets can interact)
